ImproGuise, Cape Town’s longest-running improv company — performing since 1993 — returns to The Galloway Theatre for the 14th Annual Improv Fest, a three-night celebration of bold, unscripted theatre from 18–20 March.
While the company has been delighting audiences for over three decades, the festival itself marks its 14th year — an annual showcase of everything ImproGuise does best: fearless storytelling, inventive formats, and laugh-out-loud spontaneity. Attend one night or immerse yourself in all three.
Wednesday 18 March – Fake Place
A town that doesn’t exist is about to feel startlingly real. Fake Place is a hilarious improvised theatrical experience where the setting, the people, and the story are conjured live from audience suggestions. No script. No plan. No idea what’s coming next. Each performance begins with a single question: Where are we? From there, an entire fictional town springs to life — complete with eccentric residents, tangled relationships, whispered secrets, and life choices that may not end well. What unfolds is heartwarming, unpredictable and gloriously human.
Thursday 19 March – All-Stars Games Night
Fast. Competitive. Unpredictable. The festival’s second night explodes into a high-energy showdown inspired by classic improv competition formats. ImproGuise’s favourite performers face off in rapid-fire games that test wit, teamwork and nerves of steel. Expect lightning-round challenges, outrageous characters, spontaneous songs, impossible scenarios and plenty of audience involvement.
Friday 20 March – Bat
Improvisation — in complete darkness. Performed in a theatre plunged into total blackness, Bat challenges both performers and audience to rely purely on sound and imagination. In the style of a classic radio drama, improvisers weave together characters, scenes and unfolding storylines using only voice, atmosphere and live sound. Without visuals, the imagination takes centre stage — and the results are immersive, cinematic and often unexpectedly hilarious.
Three Nights of Side-Splitting Fun
From long-form storytelling to competitive improv mayhem and pitch-black theatrical experimentation, the 14th Annual Improv Fest showcases the full spectrum of ImproGuise’s craft. Whether you’re a long-time improv fan or brand new to the experience, you can expect comedy in its purest form — raw, unscripted and utterly alive.
