Broadway to Blockbuster: Music from Stage and Screen
This June, the iconic arches of the Cape Town City Hall will vibrate with the sounds of Hollywood’s greatest scores and Broadway’s most beloved showstoppers. The Philharmonia Choir of Cape Town is proud to announce its upcoming concert series: Broadway to Blockbuster: Songs from Stage and Screen.
Under the baton of South Africa’s “Maestro of Music,” Richard Cock, the choir will be joined by the internationally acclaimed star of The Phantom of the Opera, Jonathan Roxmouth. Known for his commanding stage presence and versatile vocal range, Roxmouth will lead a program that traverses the golden age of musical theatre to the modern cinematic era.
The concert promises an emotional journey through the most recognizable melodies ever written. Audiences can look forward to soaring choral arrangements of classics from The Sound of Music and My Fair Lady, as well as high-drama moments including “Bring Him Home” from Les Misérables, “Maria” from West Side Story, a dash of the “Phantom of the Opera”, and a hit-laden medley of songs from “Singing in the Rain” to “Under the Sea”. With music ranging from the pop culture smash “Money, Money, Money” to Queen’s legendary “Bohemian Rhapsody” and the musical masterpiece of Ennio Morricone’s The Mission, this concert has something for everyone.
Providing the symphonic backbone for the evening is the Philharmonia Orchestra. In addition to accompanying the choir, the orchestra will perform sweeping instrumental suites from some of the greatest film franchises in history, including John Williams’ Star Wars, Hans Zimmer’s Pirates of the Caribbean, and music from Superman and Lord of the Rings.
