Join Cullen Taylor Clark – leading ethnomycologist, bioceutical entrepreneur, and founder of Aether Apothecary – for Cape Town’s most beloved wild mushroom forage and educational expedition.
Cullen has spent years on the frontlines of African mycology, leading groundbreaking research into South Africa’s ancient and largely undocumented relationship with fungi. Working under government-issued research permits and in collaboration with Free State University, his Lost Muti project is rewriting what we know about fungi in Southern Africa. He’s spoken at the New York Mycological Society, appeared on dozens of international podcasts, and has guided thousands of people through the forests around SA – helping them see the world beneath their feet in an entirely new way.
This is not your average nature walk. We’ll venture into the forest together, learning to spot, identify, and understand the wild mushrooms living all around us whilst also learning about their history and uses by humans for combatting maladies, feeding the tribes or even accessing altered states of consciousness. Cullen brings a rare combination of scientific rigour, indigenous knowledge, and genuine passion that makes every forage an experience people come back to again and again.
What you’ll take home:
– The ability to identify common Cape fungi with confidence
– An understanding of how mushrooms fit into the ecosystem – and into human history here in South Africa by the ethnomycologist leading the charge in this research
– A completely new way of seeing the forest and its uses
Suitable for all levels — no experience needed, just curiosity. Spots are limited. This one sells out.
Meet at 8:30am at Firetruck Coffee in the Newlands Forest parking lot on the morning of the 27th.
