Cape Town Opera presents Georges Bizet’s Carmen, a story of passion, freedom and jealousy. Based on Prosper Mérimée’s 1845 novella and set in Seville, Spain, Carmen tells the tale of a proud, independent, instinct-driven woman who would rather die than betray her own nature.
Composed by Georges Bizet, it is widely considered one of the most performed and popular operas worldwide. Its enduring fame stems from a combination of unforgettable melodies, intense passion, and the fiery, defiant character of Carmen herself. Bizet’s blend of Spanish-inspired flair, dramatic action, and emotional depth makes Carmen appealing to all audiences, and especially to those new to opera.
