Join artists Mandy Johnston and Adéle Prins for a relaxed, creative morning by the sea. Experiment with kelp, seaweed, shells, flowers and other natural forms to create beautiful blue cyanotype prints — and your very own 100% cotton canvas tote bag.
Cyanotype is an early photographic process that uses sunlight and light-sensitive chemicals to create striking blue images.
We’ll begin with a short demonstration, then experiment with coastal and botanical materials, making prints on paper and cloth.
You’ll then create your own composition on a cotton canvas tote bag, using sunlight to develop your design before rinsing to reveal your original blue artwork.
Take home your unique beach tote and experimental artwork prints!
A sun hat, sunscreen, drinking water, a towel and comfortable clothes or an apron. Feel free to bring your own leaves, flowers, shells, seaweed, lace or interesting objects.
No experience needed — just come and play! Suitable for adults.

In the 1840s, botanist and photographer Anna Atkins used cyanotype to create beautiful impressions of seaweed, producing what is widely recognised as the world’s first photographically illustrated book.
Come and play with sunlight, seaweed and the sea — and take home something beautiful you’ve made yourself!
