Born on 2 June 1958 in Springfontein and raised in Philippolis, South Africa, Stef Kruger discovered his musical voice early, experimenting with chord structures and lyric writing while still at school. One of his first compositions, “Kronkelpad Beloftes”, was recorded by Lucas Maree, marking the start of a prolific career.
Over the years, Stef’s song-writing has become a cornerstone of Afrikaans music, with more than 300 songs recorded by both established and emerging artists. A notable collaboration is with acclaimed singer Dozi, who has recorded 78 of Stef Kruger’s compositions, highlighting the depth and versatility of his work.
Stef’s music has also reached international audiences. His song “Pennies op die Spoor” was featured in the film Red Dust, and several compositions — including “Pennies op die Spoor,” “Grassade in die Wind,” and “Tussen Jou en My” — are published in the latest FAK Songbook, affirming their cultural significance.
Beyond music, Stef Kruger draws inspiration from Abstract Expressionism, a philosophy that shapes his creative vision and fuels his artistic expression. His legacy is defined by authenticity, craftsmanship, and a lifelong commitment to enriching South African arts.
