The UCT Big Band Celebrates Women is an evening dedicated to honouring the artistry, creativity, and enduring impact of women in jazz.

Showcasing works by eminent female composers and arrangers, the programme highlights a rich and diverse musical landscape shaped by women’s voices across genres and traditions. Directed by Amanda Tiffin, the concert features the dynamic UCT Jazz Voices vocal ensemble, alongside performances by UCT Jazz singing students, whose interpretations add fresh perspectives and energy to the repertoire.

The programme showcases music by pioneering composers including Toshiko Akiyoshi, Maria Schneider, Christine Jensen, and Ellen Rowe, while highlighting South African musical voices through works by Nomfundo Xaluva and Hugh Masekela, as performed by Sibongile Khumalo. The programme also features the premiere of a new arrangement of a Caiphus Semenya classic by Amanda Tiffin.

Together, these works honour the creativity, leadership, and lasting contributions of women whose voices continue to shape the past, present, and future of jazz.

The first 200 UCT students receive free entry (early bird), after which UCT student tickets will cost R50.
