We finally return to paradise this weekend!
Please join us for our most scenic adventure on the entire circuit this Sunday at 14h00 to relish False Bay without quite so many non-local tourists. Are you a Cape Town local missing feeling like a tourist? Or a Wes-Kaap tourist dreaming of becoming a local? Then you’ve stumbled on the perfect event for you.
The mini-riviera strip between the antique Muizenberg station and the majestic cocktail bars of Kalk Bay has been handed down to us as ‘millionaires’ mile’; not just due to its nouveau richy-riche citizenry, but because the wealth of history, architecture, botany, geology, zoology, gastronomy, spalaeology, anecdote, esoterica and human interest it still showcases are enough to enrich us all whilst still remaining (mostly) free to wander.
Having been Cape Town’s default getaway since the 1880’s, I want to revitalise and totally reimagine this space for you as the true birthplace of South African leisure-time. For more than five generations, this nook in the hook of the Cape has been mixed in every sense of the word – its legacy is preserved for us through the descendants of prodigal surfers, infamous Randlord speculators, stowaway Filipino sailors, press-ganged West African soldiers, ex-pat Mediterranean artisans and the cream of South African fishermen.
Likewise, its face has changed constantly, and its old denizens and facades are perhaps more unrecognisable and fascinatingly strange to its current lovers than any other spot in the country past Adderley Street.
This is a fully automated luxury tour in which all the classic tales will be regaled of the Battle of Muizenberg and Rhodes’s expiration in his Cottage whilst we frequently stop for ice-cream, tourist pictures and erudite banter.
So please, drop all the vague content-less plans you had for this Saturday morning to come relish the stories, sights and casual insanities of the space where George Bernard Shaw finally learned to boogie-board.
Save your questions, your snacks and all your best instincts for intrigue, and meet me at 14h00 on Sunday in front of Hans & Lloyd Coffee Company to traipse all the way to Mount Olympia.
