On the eve of the Autumn Equinox, as day and night begin to lean toward balance, we gather in a space of listening.
Breathing Sound is a live, immersive experience weaving conscious breathing, indigenous instruments, and contemporary sound into a contemplative and restorative journey.
Held within the Sufi Temple in Newlands, this two-hour offering invites participants into rest, nervous system regulation, and deep embodied presence. The Equinox marks a seasonal turning in the Southern Hemisphere, a gentle invitation toward reflection, softening, and inner clarity. This evening is designed as a held threshold, especially for those navigating transition, change, or the quiet call to slow down.
The journey begins with guided breath awareness, accessible and grounding. From there, a live quartet ensemble unfolds an expansive soundscape of mbira, flutes, voice, bass strings, cello, tabla, percussion, and subtle ambient textures. Indigenous plant tea will be served at the close to support integration and grounding.
This is a shared breath & sonic field, not a conventional breathwork session and music performance.

Facilitator & Composer
Sisonke Papu (KHNYSA) is a multidisciplinary artist, sound practitioner, and initiated traditional healer (iGqirha) from Mthatha in the Eastern Cape, South Africa. His work moves at the intersection of indigenous African cosmologies, breath awareness, relational sound, and contemporary sonic exploration.
Through mbira, flutes, voice, and live soundscaping, Papu creates immersive listening spaces that invite nervous system regulation, reflection, and embodied presence. Rather than fusing traditions, his work honours intentional dialogue between African ancestral sound, Indian rhythmic language, and contemporary ambient textures, allowing each lineage to remain distinct while meeting in shared listening.
His offerings have been experienced locally and internationally through sound journeys, workshops, and ceremonial performances rooted in care, reverence, and spiritual responsibility.
