“Candy & Shelley go to the desert” is a one-act play by Paula Cizmar about two friends stranded in the middle of nowhere roadtripping to the Pacific Ocean. While the resilient Candy sunbathes, the nervous, overdressed Shelley panics. They encounter a biker, confront a past betrayal, and ultimately strengthen their friendship.
The actresses – Tamryn Speirs and Shannyn Fourie – deliver funny and honest performances, spinning farce into a serio-comic drama. Playwright Paula Cizmar challenges the idea that feminists can’t laugh at themselves.
The play explores their manic inability to cope with an overheated car in “a graveyard of lizards,” their love-hate standoff, and the mysterious appearance of a biker (Rowan Studti) who becomes the catalyst to the unravelling plot. Psychologically and comically charged, the performances set alight the material.
It’s described as Two Broke Girls meets Thelma & Louise with a dusting of Dead to Me!
