MANTIS is an original BABA YAYA contemporary dance production exploring the Xhoi-San trickster deity known as Mantis. Drawing inspiration from foundational San mythology, the work journeys through themes of creation, mortality, power, prayer, and the enduring spirit of humanity.
After an incredible premier at Afrika Burn 2026, we are extremely excited to bring MANTIS to Cape Town. Collaborating with the Novalis Institute and African fine artist, Andile Dyalvane, this rendition of Mantis invites audiences into a world where myth and memory intersect, offering a reflection on both our ancestral origins and our shared human condition.
Please note the performance will start at 19:00 sharp and we recommend arriving 15-20 minutes early. Doors open at 18:30. Follow the map attached for the performance.
