More on the Artist:

His musical journey began with jazz piano lessons from the legendary Merton Barrow at Cape Town’s Jazz Workshop. After graduating from Stellenbosch University with a degree in Viticulture and Oenology, Ramon chose music over winemaking — a decision that has since seen him become one of the most respected pianists and composers on the South African jazz scene.

Over the course of his career, he has performed and recorded with an extraordinary roster of musicians, including Robbie Jansen, Errol Dyers, McCoy Mrubata, Ibrahim Khalil Shihab, Hugh Masekela collaborator Khaya Mahlangu, Terumasa Hino, Frank Paco, Dizu Plaatjies and the legendary Cape Jazz Band led by Jack Momple. His music has taken him across South Africa and to Europe, Asia and the United States, including performances at the Cape Town International Jazz Festival and international jazz festivals in Malaysia and Borneo.

As a composer, Ramon has released two albums under his own name — Picnic at Kontiki and Echoes from Louwskloof — and featured prominently on Cape Jazz Piano, a landmark recording celebrating the piano tradition of Cape Jazz. He has also produced recording projects for some of the genre’s most important musicians.

Alongside his performing career, Ramon is a respected educator and currently heads the Jazz Division at Stellenbosch University, where he continues to mentor the next generation of South African jazz musicians.

But ultimately, it is the music that makes Ramon Alexander such a compelling performer. His playing is dynamic, sensitive and deeply expressive — rooted in the history of Cape Jazz, but never trapped by it.
