The Philharmonia Choir of Cape Town presents a distinguished tribute to “The King of Instruments” in a programme celebrating the grandeur and expressive power of choral and organ music.
Under the direction of Richard Haigh, the choir performs Charles-Marie Widor’s monumental Messe à deux chœurs et orgue (Mass for Two Choirs and Organ), a masterwork of the French Romantic tradition.
Composed by Widor during his tenure as organist of Saint-Sulpice in Paris, this magnificent Mass was designed to resonate within vast cathedral spaces, combining the splendour of double choir with the rich, orchestral sonority of the organ. Sweeping in scope and deeply expressive, the work offers a compelling dialogue between voices and instrument, creating a powerful and immersive musical experience.
The programme will also feature a selection of sacred works thoughtfully curated to showcase the profound relationship between the human voice and the pipe organ. For this special performance, the Philharmonia Choir is joined by the gentlemen of the St Mary’s Cathedral Choir, with Kevin Kraak at the organ.
