Pension funds hold the savings of millions of South Africans and is one of the most important sectors of South Africa’s economy.
This edition examines South Africa’s private pension sector, exploring how pension funds are governed, administered and invested, and what this reveals about power, inequality and accountability in the country’s financial system.
How pension funds and their assets are governed and invested has profound consequences for individuals, communities and the broader economy. Yet, like many sectors of South Africa’s economy, the pension fund sector increasingly benefits a small group of financial services providers, often at the expense of fund members and the wider public.
This conversation will explore who benefits from South Africa’s retirement savings and what this tells us about ownership, wealth and power in the country today.
Featuring Michael Marchant, Cheriese Dilrajh and Sydney Moshoaliba in conversation with Letlhogonolo Letshele.
